We’re lining up the light-loafer’ed and the bored bench warmers, castaways and cutouts, fill it up, come join the youth and beauty brigade, nothing will stand in our way
– The Decemberists California One / Youth and Beauty Brigade

This past weekend the Portland, Oregon based indie folk band The Decemberists announced a new album out January 18th, “The King is Dead.” I like the band, and was excited to hear their first single (which you can listen to here) features Gillian Welch, whom I adore, but what I was excited about when they announced this release was to see their album artwork. I always loved the quirky cute drawings and lettering on their album covers. They are done by the artist and children’s book illustrator Carson Ellis who happens to be the wife of band member Colin Meloy. She works mostly with pen and ink as well as watercolors. I find her mischievous critters and characters highly endearing. Sharing with you here some of my favorites of her work…

her drawings of critters have even adorned a pair of Converse sneakers

Tara, I love the illustrations, the birds especially. A naturalist at heart she has taken it a step further in some of her drawing to a surreal commentary of her own interpretations. Send me more! I’d love to see her children’s books.
Thank you.
