This is what was happening just miles from my apartment last Thursday evening while I was sitting on my couch watching Sex & The City reruns in my bathrobe drinking Two Buck Chuck.
Yes, that is Miss Anna Wintour (I love her jewels and her furrrrr) cracking a joke to Gwyneth (with Mia Wasikowska and a dapper date looking on) at an orchid purple clothed table at the Balenciaga and Spain exhibit Opening Gala at the de Young Museum in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco.
The exhibit officially opened to the public on March 26th, and I personally cannot wait to go. It is a 120-piece fashion retrospective of the influence of the Spanish Culture on Cristobal Balenciaga’s career and work. The exhibition is split into 6 sections: Spanish Art, Regional Dress, the Spanish Court, Religious Life and Ceremony, the Bullfight, and Dance. Hamish Bowles, the European Editor-at-Large of Vogue, guest curated. It should be pretty amazing as I loved the Yves Saint Laurent exhibit the de Young put on 2 years ago (I saw twice). I am personally excited to see what directly influenced those strong shoulders that the Balenciaga brand made so famous a couple of years back. I am thinking bull-fighting jacket? I am also thrilled that our lovely San Francisco is getting to play in the world of fashion that is normally reserved only for NYC.
“His name became synonymous with perfection and elegance.”
—Baroness Pauline de Rothschild, 1973, on Mr. Balenciaga
